What is it?
The crankshaft is a carefully shaped component of the engine. Its made from cast iron metal and sits at the bottom of the engine, horizontally in the block.
What does it do?
The crankshaft is responsible for pushing the pistons up and down inside the block. it is machined to allow the pistons to move up and down independently via chunks of extended metal. As the crankshaft spins the extended metal moves towards and away from the cylinder giving a pushing and pulling motion.
What else does it do?
Attached to the crank is the flywheel and the first of the cogs for the timing system.
