What is it?
The block is the largest part of your engine not including the transmission. It is a cast iron block of metal that is machined into shape. The block houses many internal parts but the main to worry about are the Crankshaft and the Pistons.
The crankshaft spins round and pushes the pistons up and down in sequence through cylinders which are carefully machined cylindrical holes through the middle of the block. Attached to the bottom of the Block is the Sump which stores all the engines oil.
Drilled holes through the block allows the oil to channel through to the cylinder head and rocker under pressure. Keeping them fully lubricated for maximum running performance
What does it do?
As mentioned earlier the block allows oil to travel through drilled holes as well as store the oil in a pan attached to the bottom called the sump.
Inside the block a series of components make up what's know as the 'Bottom End' of the engine, the block holds these components in places and allows them to do their job internally without causing problems. Nowadays Sensors are attached to the block to ensure the internals of the Bottom End are all working as they should.
