What is it?

The timing system is what holds the whole engine process toghether, without the timing it all goes to pieces, quite literally!

Whats involved?

As you can imagine the timing of an engine is impeccable it is 100% responsible for the precise timing of each component within the engine, if it slips up your screwed.

With all that pressure in mind the timing actually does its job really, really well. The heart and sole of the timing usually comes in an external grooved rubber belt form or an internal chain system. The chain is naturally tougher but dont let this fool you as the rubber belt is just as good as long as you replace it every once in a while.

The timing belt / chain is attached to the cog that sits on the crankshaft, this cog spins at the speed of the crank which gives us our timed speed. The other end of the belt is attached to the cog that is attached to the camshaft. The belt therefore turns the cog at the cam shaft end at the same speed as the crank allowing a perfectly timed process.

Put it all togehter and what do you get?

Precision timing is the answer. While this process sounds simple its driving the whole timing of the entire engine that includes the strokes of the pistons, the opening of each of the valve sets, bearing in mind only one set can open at any one time per cylinder and should the piston be at the very top of its stroke it will hit the valve and buckle it, causing more problems.

So with that said, treat your timing with respect as without it your going nowhere fast!
